How Vera Employees Are Making A Real Difference

Advanced primary care (APC) continues to make an impact on health outcomes, engagement, and total cost of care. We’ve long claimed that we’re creating a healthcare revolution, and we’re doing it by putting patients at the center of healthcare. However, none of this would be possible without our dedicated staff and care teams who enable us to successfully deliver APC.

The last few years have not been easy on healthcare professionals. In the face of a global pandemic, Vera employees have demonstrated resilience, commitment, and dedication to the patients they serve.

People are the heart of the Vera experience

We are grateful for the Vera team members who put their hearts into this important work. They are the reason we continue to improve health outcomes, offer meaningful patient experiences, and empower the people we serve to achieve optimum social, psychological, and physical well-being.

Along these lines, we spoke with a few team members to get their input on why they love what they do. Read on to find out what they said.

" I didn't look back"

Lead Provider at Hoffman North Clinic in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Phyllis Gilmore, joined Vera Whole Health after becoming worn out in her old position. She was exhausted from the strain of treating many patients each day and only seeing them after they’d already become sick. She knew it was time for a change.

Then she learned that APC allows providers to spend more time with patients and address preventive health. 

“Most of my career was spent treating really sick people. So for me it was a real breath of fresh air to have an opportunity where I can look at 40-year-olds before they get sick, and I can try to help them keep from getting sick. And I thought maybe that's the change I need that will help me keep going.” —Dr. Gilmore

Alongside her care team, Dr. Gilmore is working to craft a comprehensive understanding of patients’ individual health journeys, build deeper relationships, and support them in making important behavioral changes. 

“We want to give quality, evidence-based care to our patients”

Kindal Andrews, APRN, and Dr. John Holman both came to Vera after becoming burnt out from working together within a traditional, fee-for-service model. They knew there had to be a better option, something that would allow them to spend more time with patients and achieve a better work-life balance.

Both team members are gratified to work within an environment where they’re valued and respected. They’re deeply dedicated, taking full advantage of longer appointment times to build strong and meaningful relationships with their patients. 

“I am inspired by the changes I see in our patients”

No conversation about the APC model would be complete without acknowledging the role of allied staff members. These important employees ensure care centers run smoothly and that patients’ experiences are deeply meaningful. Allied staff members include: Nurses (RNs, LPNs, and BSNs), Medical Assistants (MAs), and Patient Service Representatives (PSRs). 

They’re passionate about health, skilled at collaboration, empathetic, and driven to make a difference in the lives of patients.
